From Publishers Weekly
This survey, which grew out of Friedly's honors thesis at Stanford University, breaks no new ground but carefully summarizes much material on the assassination of Malcolm X, concluding that "it was actually the Nation of Islam, and not the government, whose driving desire to see the black nationalist silenced could have led to murder." After describing the assassination, Friedly sketches the highly inadequate trial, which aimed merely to decide the guilt of the three suspects and pointedly failed to illuminate the facts behind the killing. Friedly deftly dissects the various conspiracy theories, most of which suggest government agents killed Malcolm to prevent his call for African governments to condemn U.S. racism. Using information from assassin Talmadge Hayer, Friedly reconstructs the assassins' plan to kill Malcolm X, then explores Malcolm X's break with Elijah Muhammad that gave the Black Muslims a motive. Though the Nation of Islam was not an inherently violent organization, the group members possessed some characteristics--such as unswerving loyalty--that encouraged some to pursue violence. From the Publisher
In this intense book, researcher Michael Friedly examines the electric events that culminated in the assassination of Malcolm X in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom and tries to unravel the various theories.
In the process of chronicling the events that led to the Harlem shooting--the threats, the firebombing of Malcolm's home, and the final onslaught of attempts made on his life--Friedly reveals the climate of violence and deception in which the assassination took place.
Four separate attempts were made on Malcolm's life made in the weeks before his death. Additionally, Friedly details how Malcolm X, a Nation of Islam minister of 12 years, was the target of an internal plot of jealousy by several of Muhammad's ministers. He also shows the constant jockeying among the top ministers for a favored position of power with Muhammad as the old leader aged and became ill.
Malcolm X: The Assassination explores what happened to Malcolm in the year after his departure from the Nation of Islam. Friedly also covers the retaliatory strikes by Malcolm's followers against several Nation of Islam mosques across the country after the killing of the one-time Black Muslim leader.
Friedly concludes that it was actually the Nation of Islam, and not the government, whose driving desire to see the black nationalist silenced could have led to murder.
